Salesforce vs. Palantir: The AI Government BattleĀ

What better way to get your fledgling artificial intelligence (AI) product taken seriously than by positioning it at the center of one of the world’s most talked-about industries?Ā

Earlier this week, Salesforce announced that it would be launching a new business unit called Missionforce, which will focus on incorporating AI into defense workflows and teams – shortly after CEO Marc Benioff announced his aims of competing against the prolific software giant Palantir.Ā

Going Head to HeadĀ

Not long after Salesforce announced its Q2 ā€˜26 results, Marc Benioff went on record with Jim Cramer on CNBC’s Mad Money to highlight the fact that the CRM giant had scored a top US Army contract over competing data company Palantir.Ā

Palantir and Salesforce – who have not commonly been associated with each other – were suddenly thrust into the same playing field. Both companies have worked with big contracts like this before, with Salesforce already holding contracts with the US Government and Palantir scoring deals with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), BP, and NHS England.Ā

However, now the stakes are higher with competing AI offerings at play – Salesforce with Agentforce and Palantir with ā€˜Palantir Artificial Intelligence Platform’ (AIP). Although in this scenario, Palantir AI is regarded highly and seen as an ā€œearly leaderā€, it is evident that Salesforce’s suite of AI tools has not slipped completely under the radar, especially if the US Army is interested.Ā

Missionforce vs. PalantirĀ

Amid the growing discussions of these two industry giants competing in the same space, Salesforce announced the launch of Missionforce. This particular arm will be focused on supporting the needs of defense, intelligence, and aerospace agencies, and will be split into three main areas: personnel, logistics, and decision-making.Ā

Primarily, efforts will be centered around building upon the foundational aspects of Government Cloud as well as Agentforce for Public Sector, stationing Salesforce’s capabilities and tools at the very heart of the world of official US dealings.Ā

It’s likely that this move is the result of needing to establish Agentforce somewhere concrete, especially before Salesforce’s next earnings report and its flagship conference, Dreamforce, where Agentforce will be placed under the microscope. Although Agentforce has expanded into a myriad of industries, it has not yet settled somewhere solid where it can deliver tangible results on a large scale.Ā

Not only that, but this effort also feels like an additional move in Salesforce’s competitive journey with Palantir, indicating that Salesforce potentially has plans to expand further into the kind of industries that Palantir currently dominates.Ā

If this is the case, this establishes another battle for Salesforce alongside existing competition with ServiceNow and Oracle.Ā

Final ThoughtsĀ

So, is this Salesforce officially saying that it is competing with Palantir? It is certainly beginning to feel that way.Ā

Salesforce has never been afraid to compete with other companies in its own space or others’, and it certainly puts the company in the headlines. Any discussion surrounding Agentforce or Salesforce’s wider AI capabilities keeps it relevant, which is exactly what Salesforce needs right now.
